The children are taught in mixed ability classes according to age. The class teacher usually stays with the class throughout their five years at the school. During this time, the children can develop love, trust and confidence in the authority of their teacher. In return, the teachers respect and value each child and grow to understand their strengths and weaknesses. Generally speaking, a teacher will expect all children to show a willingness to take part in the lesson, to be properly equipped, to show respect for their peers and teacher, and to respect their surroundings.
The class day begins with Taichi or a movement session and circle time. This is followed by the main lesson, which lasts nearly two hours. Main lesson subjects are taught in three to six-week blocks and include all the usual academic subjects. Subjects are returned to throughout the year, using different approaches so that the children gain a deep understanding of each topic. In the primary school years, emphasis is placed on giving children the tools and understanding to discover knowledge for themselves.
All classes are also taught languages, crafts, gardening and music by specialist teachers. Wherever possible, other subjects and activities will reflect the current main lesson theme.
