Aim
In today's world, parents may feel that they have little choice when selecting an educational setting for their child. Exeter Steiner School is dedicated to offering a real and viable alternative by providing a style of education that truly embraces all aspects of the development of each individual child-social, spiritual, emotional and physical as well as intellectual. In this way we aim to inspire a passion for lifelong learning, equipping individuals with the tools they need to engage in a fast-moving world in a meaningful, wholesome and positive way.
About Rudolf Steiner
Born in 1861 in what is now Croatia, Steiner studied science and philosophy in Vienna and soon became a respected thinker, publishing his philosophical treatise The Philosophy of Freedom in 1894. Later he began to speak about his spiritual experiences and describe how he was able to make use of his scientific training in such a way that his spiritual investigations could become a science in their own right. He called the results of this spiritual science Anthroposophy and the Anthroposophical Society was founded at the Goetheanum in Switzerland in 1913.
Steiner Waldorf Education
With over 700 Waldorf schools world wide and countless initiative schools emerging, Waldorf education has become a popular alternative to other types of education and is the biggest international school movement in the world. We live in an era where parents feel they have few choices and a lot of pressure is put upon their children to begin formal learning at a very early age. The Steiner curriculum, on the other hand, recognises that physical, emotional, social and artistic development precede, and are the foundation of, intellectual skills, supporting the child in each stage of his or her growth as an individual. This helps to build the child's motivation and creativity, launching a life-long journey in learning while preserving the precious gift of childhood.
History of the Exeter Steiner SchoolThe long term aim of the Exeter Steiner School is to make Steiner Waldorf education available to all, regardless of religion, race, social and financial background.
The Exeter Steiner School began in January 1997 when a small group of parents asked students of the Steiner/Waldorf Teacher Training program at the University of Plymouth to create a Kindergarten. We moved to St Thomas in 2002, and further rapid expansion led to a move to our current site in 2006. We now provide parent and child toddler groups, pre-kindergarten nursery, kindergarten, classes 1 to 5 and afternoon care.
